一邊適應新環境，剛加入雷霆隊的球星安東尼（Carmelo Anthony）不忘伸出援手賑災，他和小牛隊後衛巴瑞亞（J.J. Barea）在一周以來已募集超過33萬美元，作為遭受颶風瑪莉亞重創的波多黎各重建基金。
波多黎各是美國在加勒比海地區的境外領土，上周受颶風瑪莉亞侵襲，島上幾乎全面停電，基礎建設也嚴重受損，根據官方統計，超過10人因此喪命，政府將面臨730億美元的債務危機。
父親來自波多黎各的安東尼，以及NBA唯一出自波多黎各的巴瑞亞率先帶頭募款，安東尼原本的目標是募得10萬美元，結果不到一周就達標；巴瑞亞雖還沒募得相同的善款，但有小牛老闆庫班（Mark Cuban）相挺，今天將代表小牛到波多黎各賑災，晚上會帶著母親和祖母回到美國。
巴瑞亞先前受訪已提到，波多黎各受創嚴重，通信、電力、用水都停擺，「我們會盡最大力量來救援，我們會和家人聯繫，訂立計劃，在之後幾天到幾周開始賑災。」他表示，過往也曾遭遇些天災，「但從沒像這次那麼嚴重。」
安東尼則承諾，要盡自己力量號召眾人投入救援，他也呼籲各界別忽視波多黎各，「波多黎各是美國的一部分，所以我們不能忽視這個島嶼，別忽視我們的波多黎各子民，我們需要一切援助。」
在此之前，馬刺隊退役球星鄧肯（Tim Duncan）也曾為遭逢颶風侵襲的故鄉美屬維京群島籌募善款，連同他出資的100萬美元，總共募集近400萬美元；上周他已親赴維京群島探訪，募集款項也將全數做為賑災之用。
